Even without a paid job, finding time for art is not straightforward, especially during the Summer vacation months in the US. My kids are not up for me dragging them around on photo shoots, even for a short while.
My solution to this ever-present issue has been to get up really EARLY! Our three-week trip to Australia gave this a major boost in the form of jet-lag. Getting up at 4am and 5am has not been too hard, and gives me several hours to photograph before the house begins to stir.
The times I can shoot shaped the kind of photography I've been practicing. Long exposure landscapes and urban exploration. Something that I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise.
Starting tomorrow, my life partner begins early-start working hours, leaving home around 6am. With the kids returning to school next week I'm looking forward to shooting from 8am onwards, as well as feeling sadness that my early mornings are coming to a close, at least for the weekdays.
