I had FUN taking these photos. I had to get up real early and I was investigating areas not clearly accessible to the general public. Engaging the union guys was both intriguing as a photographer (how do I shoot these guys well?) as well as an activist and neighbor (are they winning? what is it like to be here day after day for months?).
At the same time I'm not particularly thrilled with them. The compositions are average and getting a shot that really tells the story of the picket was trickey. But that's ok. My priority is fun and enjoyment while actively building skills and noticing where I'm lacking. A surprising lesson (though in retrospect it shouldn't be) was that when I'm photographing at my full height (6'4") the camera is looking way down on most folks. I need to get down real low just to be at eye level!
