Day in the Life of a Professional Photographer Day #23: Positive Feedback

Being new to the whole self-promotion-for-paid-work world, each step I take feels like a game of blind man's bluff. It's a party game from my childhood where the person who is "it" wears a blindfold and the other players call out and dash away, fooling the person's sense of where people are in the room, avoiding the tag.

I'm no marketing specialist, so I learn from what others tell me works and hope for the best. One strategy I've been trying is posting something on Facebook everyday - which is more challenging than I first imagined. Yesterday I received a phone call from a friend asking if I'd started a photography business because they'd seen me posting photos on Facebook like crazy. They had a potential gig for me. This was such great feedback!

So I wanted to post this encouragement to all of us out in the world self-promoting and wondering if it is going to pay off.

It also got me thinking. How come this person had to see me post loads of photos on Facebook before realizing I was working as a photographer? Because I didn't tell her directly! So my next marketing challenge is to reach out to everyone I know and make sure they know.
